The pioneers Robert Edwards and Patrick Steptoe were behind this success, which evoked attention all over the world. Initially, however, many colleagues as well as voices in the general public were critical. It had taken 102 IVF-treatments to achieve the first pregnancy. Today IVF is the most important method for treatment of infertility. In 2010 the Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to Robert Edwards for the development of in vitro fertilization.

History of tube babies in Turkey

While developments in test-tube baby in the world with great speed, Turkey also caught lag behind these developments and advancing tube baby methods. As a result, in 1987 at Ege University Faculty of Medicine, Turkey’s first test-tube baby pregnancy and infant health was held in a way the world has come to. Turkey’s first private IVF Center began providing services in 1994 in Ankara. The first microinjection in Turkey, TESA, MESA methods were done at the same time in the countries of the world. Today, 120 tube baby center located in Turkey. These;

Universities,

With the opening of in vitro fertilization centers, various legal regulations and restrictions have been made for this matter as in other countries. For this reason, Ministry of Health General Directorate of Mother and Child Health and Family Planning Regulation on Reproductive Treatment Centers has been reported.

Since May 25, 2007, state support for IVF treatments has been reorganized and expanded. According to this support, the couples working under SSK and Bağkur were examined in the SUT field within the SSI and the employees under the Pension Fund were examined in the BUT field under the Ministry of Finance.

Infertility research has actually been going on for decades. However, fertilization of human eggs outside the body was achieved in the late 1960s.

In 1968, an artificial tube was inserted into a woman with clogged tubes, but no success was achieved. After such unsuccessful attempts, the studies returned to insemination studies outside the body.

For the first time, insemination was achieved outside the body in 1973. However, after fertilization, the embryo could not be implanted in the uterus (ie, “could not be implanted”) and lost with miscarriage.

Dr.Steptoe and Dr. Edwards made his first successful in vitro fertilization trial in England in July 1978 and the famous “Louise Brown” was born. Three years later, Carr Elizabeth Carr Howard was born as a result of the success of Howard and Geargeanna Jones, a member of the team in England, who continued their studies by establishing a new institute for themselves in Norfolk. This Institute (The Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine) has trained new specialists who have become leaders in reproductive medicine in the United States and in many countries around the world.

Prof.Dr.Murat Arslan also received training and experience in this center.

After this stage, the target has progressed towards the development of ovulation treatments. Hormones that were used for this purpose started to be developed in 1979 and 1980.

Although the original point of use of the IVF idea is that the tubes are clogged, this idea has become more mature, and its application areas and reasons have increased day by day.

Giving the embryo to the woman by methods such as GIFT and ZIFT are important steps. In couples with sperm problems, sperm-egg meeting was provided by methods such as SUZI and PZD.

However, the real progress was achieved by the coincidence of ICSI in 1996. The success rate of in vitro fertilization by ICSI, which is microinjection, has been further increased and significant progress has been made in male infertility problems that were previously indifferent.
