In IVF, the egg and sperm meet in the laboratory, so open tubes are not needed. If only one tube is blocked, or the blockage is mild, the picture is different. Here is a plain-language guide to each situation.<\/p>\n<h2>What do the fallopian tubes do?<\/h2>\n<p>The tubes are two thin channels between the ovaries and the womb. They catch the egg and carry it to the place where it meets sperm. Fertilization normally happens inside the tube, and the embryo then travels to the womb. If a tube is blocked, sperm cannot reach the egg, or the embryo cannot pass into the womb.<\/p>\n<h2>Why do tubes become blocked?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Past infections:<\/strong> Pelvic infections, including sexually transmitted ones such as chlamydia, can leave scar tissue.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Endometriosis:<\/strong> Tissue similar to the womb lining growing outside the womb can damage the tubes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Previous surgery:<\/strong> Adhesions after appendix surgery, cyst surgery or cesarean section.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A previous ectopic pregnancy<\/strong> or tubal surgery.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hydrosalpinx:<\/strong> The end of the tube closes and fills with fluid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How is a blockage found?<\/h2>\n<p>Most women have no symptoms. The most common test is the HSG (hysterosalpingogram): a special dye is passed through the womb and tubes while X-ray images are taken. Special ultrasound methods and, when needed, laparoscopy (looking inside the abdomen with a small camera) can also be used. Sometimes a tube looks blocked only because it was in spasm during the test, so results should be read by an experienced doctor.<\/p>\n<h2>When is IVF recommended?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Both tubes are blocked,<\/li>\n<li>The tubes were tied or removed and repair is not suitable,<\/li>\n<li>Hydrosalpinx is present,<\/li>\n<li>The blockage comes with another factor such as age, endometriosis or a sperm problem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If one tube is open and nothing else is wrong, a period of natural attempts or ovulation tracking, sometimes with IUI (insemination), may be reasonable. The choice between IUI and IVF depends on your age and other findings.<\/p>\n<h2>Hydrosalpinx: a special point before IVF<\/h2>\n<p>When fluid collects in a tube, it can flow back into the womb and make it harder for an embryo to implant. Studies show that hydrosalpinx visible on ultrasound can lower IVF success, and that closing or removing the affected tube surgically can reduce this effect. So if it is found, the tube is addressed before embryo transfer. Freezing embryos and transferring them at the right time can also be part of the plan.<\/p>\n<h2>Tubal surgery or IVF?<\/h2>\n<p>Surgery is sometimes tried for mild adhesions or small blockages at the tube end. When damage is advanced, age is higher or another factor exists, surgery is less likely to work and the risk of ectopic pregnancy afterward can rise. When time matters, IVF is generally the more predictable path. The decision rests on your age, tube condition, ovarian reserve and your partner&#8217;s sperm results.<\/p>\n<h2>What are the chances with IVF for tubal factor?<\/h2>\n<p>Women with a tubal problem often have healthy ovaries, so results mostly depend on age and embryo quality. No honest doctor can promise a specific figure, because every couple is different.
